Culture Diffusion - Lesson Plan

Instructional Activity Plan - Cultural Diffusion

Step 1: What do you plan to teach? What materials will your students and you need?

Instructional Activity’s Learning Objective:

Culture Diffusion – By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify a type of cuisine they enjoy in the USA that originated from different culture

Materials Needed:

Ramen, computer, paper, PowerPoint

Step 2: How will you introduce what you plan to teach?  How will you gain attention and interest?  How will you make the objective relevant and meaningful?  How will you build the necessary background knowledge for the activity’s learning objective?  How will you “Teach with the Brain AND Student in Mind?”

  1. Hook – I will give what culture diffusion is (Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group of people to another. ) and show a short youtube rap about culture diffusion

This will be teaching with a student in mind because music appeals to students.  It is a creative way to introduce a topic to high-school students and shows the meaning and importance behind the lesson.

I also hope this is a bit novel and fun. Most students are familiar with raps this can appeal to them emotionally since so, this would also be teaching with the brain in mind.

Step 3:  How will you teach the activity’s objective?  How will you model?  What other techniques will you use to engage the learners? How will you provide guided practice of your objective?  How will you “Teach with the Brain AND Student in Mind?”

  1. INPUT – I will explain the importance of culture diffusion and how it can change a society – I will give a more in depth description of culture diffusion in American society and provide some examples of how this looks
  2.  to make sure everyone understand I will put up some images of culture diffusion that happens in the school cafeteria and have the students  share with their shoulder partner what they found and why this is an example of culture diffusion then I will have one person share with us what they discovered with their partners

This will be teaching with the brain in mind because I will give a visual example

  1. MODEL – I will model a type of cuisine that I enjoy eating and how it has evolved – Ramen give everyone a different type of ramen packet they can hold – explain where it originated from and how it has spread to USA 5.
  2. GUIDED PRATICE – I will ask the students to brainstorm together and think of other cuisines that they can enjoy in the USA that were either brought over by another culture or influenced by another culture.
  3. INDEPENDENT PRATICE – Students will do an activity by themselves – they will have a choice of  either choosing something they enjoyed eating while growing up how you would infuse that with another cultures cuisine or pick your favorite dish and use your phone to research where it came from originally

I am chunking information so, it is not too much at once and High school students like being able to make their own choices – by giving them a choice at the end they can relate it back to something that is meaningful to them while giving them some control over what they will do.  This is both teaching with a student in mind and teaching with the brain in mind.

Step 4:  How will you close or end the activity?  How will you review the activity’s objective?  How will you encourage reflection and feedback?  How will you “Teach with the Brain AND Student in Mind?”

  1. To close the activity I will ask students to share what they picked for for the independent practice and give them a task to reflect on – Students will present the activity from the independent practice and then be asked to reflect on when they go to eat somewhere or go to an activity see where it originated from and how it has bene adaptable to fit in our culture
